Orange Sky provides free mobile laundry and shower services to people experiencing homelessness, offering not only practical support but also the dignity of genuine human connection. When Michaela and Liis visited our Rotary club to share their work, they explained how Orange Sky’s bright vans create safe, welcoming spaces where volunteers sit down for conversations while the washing is being done. For many people doing it tough, these simple moments — a clean shirt, a warm shower, and a friendly chat — can restore confidence, build trust and help them feel seen and valued. Their presentation reminded us how small acts of kindness can make a profound difference in someone’s week, and why community‑driven initiatives like Orange Sky matter so deeply. Katelyn is our latest sponsored Rotary Youth Sailing Challenge participant. Katelyn is pictured in front of the One and All surrounded by fellow Rotarians with her mother at her side. On this trip the One and All is circumnavigating Kangaroo Island. We look forward to hearing her talk about the fun she had on the One and All, as well as challenges she faced learning to sail, navigate and work within a team. Rotary Youth Sailing Challenge – Benefits for Young PeopleThe Rotary Youth Sailing Challenge offers young students a powerful blend of adventure, teamwork, and personal growth aboard a fully crewed sailing vessel. Over several days at sea, participants learn to work together under real conditions, developing resilience, communication skills, and confidence as they tackle navigation tasks, shared responsibilities, and changing weather. The challenge encourages leadership in a practical, hands‑on environment where every action matters, helping students discover their strengths while building trust and camaraderie with their peers. Away from everyday distractions, they gain a deeper appreciation for the ocean, environmental stewardship, and the value of collective effort. For many, it becomes a transformative experience—one that strengthens character, expands horizons, and inspires a lasting sense of achievement. The Rotary club of Holdfast Bay is pleased to offer youth sponsorship for the Rotary Youth Sailing Challange (RYSC), and help to Create Lasting Impact.

International Committee project Mongolian Arts Therapy Pilot Program A major pilot project named Healthy Relationships has the aim of reducing aggressive behaviour through early learning. This is being managed by the Glow Art Therapy Association located in Ulaanbaatar the capital of Mongolia, the target country. This association has designed and trialled elements of the program in a Daycare Centre kept open for essential workers during the Covid 19 pandemic. History tells us that the best way to change the future of a society is to begin with the children.

African region declared free of wild poliovirus
Rotary and its GPEI partners celebrate a monumental achievement, say global eradication of wild polio is possible with the continued dedication and persistence of Rotarians The World Health Organization (WHO) on 25 August announced that transmission of the wild poliovirus has officially been stopped in all 47 countries of its African region. This is a historic and vital step toward global eradication of polio, which is Rotary's top priority. After decades of hard won gains in the region, Rotary and its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) - WHO, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, UNICEF, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Gavi, the vaccine alliance - are proclaiming the milestone an achievement in public health. They offer it as proof that strong commitment, coordination, and perseverance can rid the world of polio.

Immediate Past President Peter provided a report on Club activities during 2019-2020 including the Club’s achievement of receiving two District Awards for Community Service and Public Relations. After her induction as President, Kim Harvey spoke about building on our Club’s strengths and utilising our assets (partnerships, shed, members and partners) to increase our service opportunities.

The 1000 Paper Cranes project was initiated by Natsumi Oda, a Rotary Foundation Scholar from Japan who is studying a Masters of Social Work at Flinders University. Natsumi is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Ogaki Naka and hosted by the Rotary Club of Holdfast Bay.

GROUP STUDY EXCHANGE (GSE) We had a very successful dinner on 25th April where we hosted the Group 8 clubs, and other Rotarians to a presentation of the Group Study Exchange Team (GSE) members who are visiting us from Missouri in the USA. We had 90 guests who enjoyed an enlightening presentation from the team. The GSE team consists of 5 members. The Rotary Group Study Exchange (GSE) program is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for young business and professional people in the early years of their professional lives. The program provides travel grants for teams to exchange visits between paired areas in different countries. For approximately 4 weeks, team members experience the host country's institutions and ways of life, observe their own vocations as practiced abroad, develop personal and professional relationships and exchange ideas.

RC of Glenelg Cold Plunge
Posted by Jan Vade on Aug 09, 2018
They were at it again ! And we helped a little, again .. This year’s Cold Plunge was colder than ever. Being held on the 5th August at 10:30am, it is a full two weeks earlier (and colder) than previous years’ events. Truly an event worth experiencing, whether it be in the water or on the foreshore, just taking part gives its own sense of reward. The aim is to raise money for homeless organisations in Adelaide and raise awareness of the plight of everyday Australians who, through circumstances beyond their control have found themselves doing it tough. Every year Rotarians, Politicians and others swim in cold water and shiver for a good cause.

A Report by Jan Vade
We stand on our feet much of our lives. Some occupations and some sports are even more demanding and place strain and injuries on our feet. Also, as we age, problems with our feet increase. Pain and injuries becomes more frequent and heal more slowly. Pain can be a cause of much suffering, but also, can isolate people. Podiatry can help in pain management and help maintaining mobility. In the past there was help through chiropody. Good as it was it provided limited help. These days better education and high technology have transformed Podiatry into a very effective and helpful branch of medical services.

ADVENTURES IN THE GULF OF ST VINCENT A Report by Alan Larkin
Club members Peter Gapp and Alan Larkin recently sailed on the training ship the 'One and All' for a five hour voyage from the ship's berth in the Port River out into the Gulf of St Vincent. Rotarians from Districts 9520 and 9500 enjoyed the outing which promoted the opportunities for young people aged 15 - 18 identified by their teachers as having potential as young leaders. The regular crew of the One and All worked with a team of trainees of varying experience and prior training in very harmonious and effective ways. The cohesion of the team and the mutual respect and support for each other was very apparent. Several of the crew had undertaken a five day training sail to Port Lincoln only a few weeks previously. Their confidence and commitment to the various tasks was quite amazing. I spoke to one 15 year old high school student from Christies Beach Secondary School when he descended from furling the sails at the top of the mast and his enthusiasm and obvious enjoyment of his new found skills were fantastic.

The Australian colonies sent troops to South Africa to fight with the British. South Australia sent nine contingents of South Australian troops to the war during the three years. 1531 men and 1507 horses joined the war. By the end of the war on 31st May 1902 at least 59 South Australians had been killed. The Proclamation Day - South Australia
Posted by Jan Vade
On Thursday, 28th December members of our club cooked a BBQ for the people attending the City of Holdfast Bay Proclamation Day Ceremony at the Old Gum Tree. This was an annual event in which our club works very closely with the City of Holdfast Bay. The Old Gum Tree is a historic site in Glenelg North, South Australia. Near this tree on 28 December 1836, the British Governor John Hindmarsh delivered the proclamation creating the Colony of South Australia. A ceremony is held each year at the site on Proclamation Day, with the current Governor reading out Hindmarsh's original speech. Thank you to Brenton Tiver for organising the day and to his team of hard workers who supported the day. It was another successful event for the club.

Melbourne Cup Dinner 2017
Melbourne Cup Dinner Fun and Games. It is not all hard work and service. This time work had to give way to pleasure. The Melbourne Cup Eve night was great fun and it was good to welcome partners and friends to the event. Thank you to Judy & Anne for all the work they did to make this so much fun. On the 6th November we held the annual pre-Melbourne Cup night dinner. Judy Shipp hosted the event and kept us on our toes with quiz questions, and charades. The race caller, Gary did not predict the winner for us this year in his race call. The evening was a time for the members to dress up in their best outfits. Judy Hoban was awarded the prize for the best outfit. The night was enjoyed by everyone.

We Support Foodbank SA
We Support Foodbank SAOur speaker on 30th October was Greg Pattison from Foodbank. Foodbank is a non-denominational, non-profit organisation which acts as a pantry to the charities and community groups who feed the hungry. It was first established in 1992 in NSW and now has a presence in every state and the Northern Territory with distribution centres in all state capitals as well as a number of regional centres. Foodbank rescues edible, but surplus food and groceries from the country’s farmers, manufacturers and retailers. This includes product that is out of specification, close to date code, has incorrect labelling or damaged packaging as well as excess stock and deleted lines. Without Foodbank much of this food would simply go to landfill.

Heave Heart - Go for a defibrilator
Posted by Jan Vade on Nov 16, 2017
Defibrillators Save Lives Guest Speaker Tim Bowen, 16th November, 2017 Tim Bowen spoke to us on the need for the public to have access to defibrillators. The sooner a defibrillator is used on a patient the less damage is done to their brain. "A defibrillator is easy to use," he said. "There is no danger to the patient nor the user and it is relatively cheap to buy", he reassured us. Kim, Satish and Roger were good demonstrators on the use of a defibrillator.

At the meeting on 14th August we welcomed Keith Tidswell from the Rotary Club of Ankara in Turkey. Judy Shipp sat next to Keith on a flight from Perth and they got talking. Once she found out that Keith was a Rotarian, Judy invited him to visit our club. Keith gave us a brief talk about the refugee crisis in Turkey. We look forward to seeing him again at one of our meetings. We were also joined by three of the students from Suneden School who we sponsored to attend the Special Olympics held in Brisbane in the July school holidays. Tyler and Brodie were joined by their mother, and Joseph was accompanied by his mother. It was wonderful to hear how much the boys learned from this experience. They were very proud of all the medals and awards they won and were happy to show them off. We enjoyed the delicious cake which they brought for our dessert.

We Welcomed PDG Euan Miller
Posted by Jan Vade on Aug 07, 2017
On 7th August we welcomed our Guest Speaker PDG Euan Miller and visiting student from the Philippines, Eula Mae Gonzales. Also, we welcomed Bright Evbuonwan, our regular visitor. PDG Euan Miller’s topic was “Attracting Younger Members to Rotary.” Euan spoke to us of the procedures and activities the Rotary Club of Norwood took to attract new, younger members. As their first step the club took was to survey younger people in their district to find what they did not like about Rotary. Once this was done the club then looked at strategies to attract members. All the club members filled in a health check of the club. A Strategic Plan for the next few years was formed and changes to the culture of the club were made.

Helping people with disabilities make their own music
Music has been an important part of leading an ordinary life for students at the Music School for Children With Disabilities in Honor of Paul Harris in Lublin, Poland. Founded by Rotary members, the school serves 20 students with various disabilities, including Down syndrome, autism, and visual impairments. The Rotary Club of Lublin-Centrum-Maria Curie-Sklodowska has provided funding with help from Rotary Foundation Matching Grants and the Henryk Wieniawski Musical Society, which houses the school. After their son Mateusz was born with underdeveloped eyes, Mariusz and Joanna Kania looked for ways to help him be active. When he showed an aptitude for music, they looked for a teacher and were thrilled to find the Paul Harris music school.

Finding Safe Haven
For years, Angalia Bianca had slept in abandoned buildings throughout Chicago. She stole. She did drugs. She spent time in and out of jail for forgery, theft, trespassing, and possession of narcotics. But after she landed in prison for the seventh time, something changed -- Bianca knew she wanted a better life. She just didn’t know how to make it happen. After serving her time, Bianca sought help from a local homeless organization, A Safe Haven, and moved to its shelter in the Rogers Park neighborhood. Bianca followed the program closely -- she attended all the required meetings, passed drug tests, and volunteered at every opportunity.

India celebrates three years without polio
Throughout India and around the world, Rotary clubs are celebrating a major milestone: India has gone three years without a new case of polio. The last reported case was a two-year-old girl in West Bengal on 13 January 2011. To mark this historic triumph, Rotary clubs illuminated landmarks and iconic structures throughout the country with four simple but powerful words, "India is polio free." The three-year achievement sets the stage for polio-free certification of the entire Southeast Asia region by the World Health Organization. The Indian government also plans to convene a polio summit in February to commemorate this victory in the global effort to eradicate polio.
