40 Years of Service to our Community

Information supplied by Kate Davies

Our Club was chartered on 13th May 1978.  We celebrated and remembered our birthday in company of former members and their partners.  Also, we enjoyed company of representatives of Brighton Secondary School and Suneden Special School.  Throughout our forty years we supported these two schools and they have a special place in our history.

On the evening of 14th May 2018 we had almost a hundred people attend our function.  Five members and one partner recounted tales that gave us an insight into the club history.  One member provided photo albums.  Also, there were photos of events of the past placed on the tables. Much discussion followed.

We have all witnessed much change since our charter day.  In those days postman was still delivering mail, Yellow Pages consisted of two thick volumes and mobile phones were the size of a house brick.  We are looking forward to still more changes as the years go by.

The purpose of the evening was to celebrate our history and the achievements during our 40 years of service.  We supported many local organisations and sponsored many students on Rotary Youth Programmes. We, also, supported many Rotary International projects and peace efforts.

We raised close to $1,000,000 through a variety of fundraising projects, dinners, movie nights, lots of cooking.  We served!

The highlight of the evening was the Paul Harris Fellowship recognition for Lance Meaney and Peter Rugless (PHF +3 sapphires).  Lance was there for the first meeting in 1978 and Peter followed soon after the club was chartered.  Both are still active members of our club.
We are all looking forward to the next 40 years …
